the municipality of Almere and the province of Flevoland invited five up-and-coming architects to submit a design for an art pavilion. The jury unanimously chose Studio Ossidiana’s poetic plan, merging architecture, art and nature, which offers a stimulating experience both indoors and outdoors.

An eye-catching building

Studio Ossidiana is building is a new, temporary art pavilion in Almere, that will open its doors in April 2022. This truly eye-catching building, with three circular volumes nestled on the water like jewellery, is tailor-made for Flevoland and making use of Flevoland soil. It merges architecture, art and landscape, and offers visitors a stimulating experience both indoors and outdoors. Part of the pavilion is made from a terrazzo developed by Studio Ossidiana, which uses shells, mussels, clay and charcoal in reference to Flevoland’s soil.

During DDW, the designers show material samples, objects and games emerge from their research. Inspired by the history and ecology of Flevoland, the cast mixtures combine sea shells and earth, charcoal and expanded clay, producing new ‘cast soils’. These fragments translate the story of Flevoland and Almere, its transition from sea to land, from salty to fresh water, from navigation to cultivation, into a new material vocabulary.

Testing ground for a new museum

The art pavilion will open its doors on 14 April 2022 at the start of the prestigious world horticultural exhibition Floriade Expo. It will function as an annexe and testing ground for the new museum for at least five years. The art pavilion is being developed on behalf of the municipality of Almere and the province of Flevoland, and made possible in part with support from the Fonds Verstedelijking Almere and BPD Cultuurfonds.
