(Archive) Portal Eindhoven - The AR application

Eindhoven doesn't look back!

With some cities the history is known and clearly visible. You can find it in the buildings, Museums and historical fellowships. Eindhoven is different, it doesn’t look back. This is not justified. Eindhoven has a rich, almost unknown history, which is worth telling. Several heritage foundations and institutes own a treasure of stories and objects they would like to put the spotlight on. To find new ways to make it possible to experience the history of the city, Cultuur Eindhoven matched heritage foundations with designers, architects and other makers from the creative industry. The Portal is just one of the projects. It offers a collaboration of heritage foundations (Henri van Abbe Stichting, AWN Eindhoven museum en de gemeente Eindhoven) and the Portal Consortium of designers (MaMaProducties, Kaiser VR, Studio Speciaal en Luis Ferreira).
The Portal Eindhoven brings the history and perhaps, the future, of Eindhoven to life.

The Portal acts like a time machine.

The physical of the Portal is formed by an interactive Art installation made by Studio Speciaal and Luis Ferreira, based on the map of Eindhoven from 1560. (This is the first time that the Eindhoven of today is recognizable on the map made by Jacob van Deventer, at the behest of the Spanish King).
If you are standing on the map in front of the Portal you can open the accompanying Augmented Reality application, made by MaMa Producties and KaiserVR. This application is a prototype specially made to turn the Portal into a time machine.
You can experience the Market square during the Middle Ages or the Castle of Eindhoven. But you can also chose to not travel back that far and visit City Hall in the fifties for example.
The past will truly come alive when you step through the Portal.
In each historical layer you will find historical objects who will tell you more about the history of Eindhoven, like the sword they found in 2007 during excavations of the 18-september square. Or the famous DAF cars who were still produced in Eindhoven during the fifties.
