Getting your hair cut at DDW? Yes, indeed!

The Social Hair Salon

All over the world, people get their hair cut. No matter where you are or what type of hairdresser you go to, the hair salon is a social and democratic place. A place where you get together, sit and relax, chat about the weather, the latest gossip or simply talk about life while getting pampered. It is often a welcoming “safe space” at the heart of the community, which is why it is only natural that the Embassy of Inclusive Society, located right in the heart of Dutch Design Week (DDW), features a functioning hair salon too.

During DDW, local hairdressers move their salons to Ketelhuisplein. Besides tending to their loyal customer base, they make sure to leave some spots open for DDW visitors. It is not only a haircut, it is an entire experience. Together with the participating hairdressers, social designer Manon van Hoeckel designed new hairdressing rituals to create a safe space for an open conversation about inclusivity. Are you ready to take a good look in the mirror?

While getting a haircut, you can explore the related works of Bruno Baietto, Oluwatomilola Adefioye, Kevin Osepa, and Wendy Owusu.
