A Shared Virtual Journey
VR Silent Disco transforms the familiar silent disco into a shared virtual journey, where participants inhabit the same space as avatars. Through VR headsets and headphones, up to twelve people simultaneously experience a world shaped by music, movement, and light. No longer isolated in their own rhythm, participants are part of a collective environment in which every gesture and beat resonates across the shared space. The specially composed track Show Me the Light by Brass Rave Unit guides this journey, ensuring that each participant is both performer and observer in a continuously evolving, immersive landscape. As the experience speeds up, looping and intensifying, it begins to feel familiar—like our own fast-moving lives—and leaves a quiet question hanging in the air: are we still in control of our actions, or are we just being led by the beat?
On Context & Creation
The project situates itself at the intersection of immersive technology, contemporary music, and collaborative performance. The prototype launched during Brass Rave Unit’s concert at Paradiso, Amsterdam, and was selected for IFFR 2025’s Immersive Media program. The final version premieres during Amsterdam Dance Event (ADE) 2025. Designed as a location-based multiplayer VR experience with hand tracking, the installation allows ten participants per 15-minute session on Meta Quest 3 hardware. VR Silent Disco exemplifies how digital tools can create environments that foster connection, contemplation, and a heightened awareness of rhythm, space, and shared experience.
