The Punch Card Series
In March 2026, I came across a box of old knitting-machine tools containing a stack of punch cards. I became fascinated by these small, seemingly simple cards and the way their 24-stitch-wide perforated patterns mechanically guide the needles of the knitting machine, translating a fixed sequence of holes into intricate knitted structures.
The punch card is an old and analogue method of pattern-making—one that requires the machine, the card and the maker to work together. Working with these cards became an exploration of what can still be created with this almost forgotten technology.
With this small knitwear collection, I explore the wide range of structures, textures and visual effects that can emerge from the same fundamental system.
By combining different punch-card patterns with a variety of yarns and materials, I experiment with the contrast between delicate and dense structures, subtle and extravagant colour combinations, and traditional knitwear techniques with unexpected material outcomes.
