“Withheld” (2025) fabric, metal 116 x 70 x 25 cm
“Withheld” (2025) fabric, metal 116 x 70 x 25 cm
Withheld is a woven image based on an industrial site in Wallonia, observed while cycling. Its lines create distance, while the empty space and metal structure refer to something that once existed.

Vanished Past

"Withheld" began with an image I encountered while cycling through the industrial landscape of Wallonia. I was drawn to a factory structure with its dense network of lines, beams and openings. Rather than documenting the site directly, I translated it into a woven composition. The different elements are compressed into a layered image, making the factory difficult to read at first and creating a sense of distance between the viewer and the place. This distance also reflects the experience of encountering the site from the outside, without direct access. A deliberate opening interrupts the woven image, suggesting something that has disappeared or changed. The work is suspended from a metal construction based on structural forms found in industrial architecture, bringing elements of the original site into the physical structure of the work.

About Simon De Bosscher

My artistic practice explores places, landscapes and architecture through traces of time, change and absence. I work with textile, photography, drawing, plaster and found materials, creating installations that explore the relationship between material, space, nature and industry.
