Your access to art
Kunstkantine started as a collective with an idea, a lot of enthusiasm and just enough naivety to simply begin. What started as a nomadic gallery popping up at festivals, old factories and unexpected places has grown into an art and food space in Groningen and a community of artists, creatives and everyone in between.
At the heart of Kunstkantine is a simple idea: art should be accessible, unexpected and everywhere. We put emerging artists in the spotlight and give them room to experiment, with a strong focus on talent from the North of the Netherlands. We believe art can exist in all kinds of contexts. In galleries and museums, but just as naturally in a canteen, at a festival or somewhere else. By placing art in different contexts, we invite you to stay curious, look again and discover art in your own way.
Our home may be in Groningen, but we don’t believe art should stay in one place. By constantly changing context, we create new ways to experience art and new opportunities for emerging artists to be seen. Not everything has to make sense. Perfect is boring anyway.
It's all about the Canteen
& Why a canteen? Because a canteen is a place where people naturally come together. You sit down, eat something, meet someone, have a conversation and stay a little longer. At Dutch Design Week, we’re building a temporary canteen in the middle of Manifestations. Art isn’t something you only pass by, it becomes part of the space you spend time in. Work by emerging artists appears throughout the canteen, next to tables, above your head and in unexpected corners.
And of course, a canteen needs food. With A Toast to Art, our chefs Ids & Isak serves toast, dips and toppings alongside drinks. Grab a toast, take a seat and look around. Because where better to experience art than right in the middle of it?
