Innovation & the Transition Square | Wednesday, October 21 | 9:30 a.m.–12:00 p.m.
What if we could give existing “unused” spaces in the city a new purpose?
Every city or town has them: squares designed for a single purpose—parking. Concrete-covered spaces where temperatures rise in the summer and that don’t invite social interaction or serve other purposes when there are no cars parked there. At the same time, we’re seeking more space for housing, green areas, water, social interaction, biodiversity, and a healthy living environment. Isn’t there another way?
At Living LAB 040, there is a large square made of Stelcon slabs, originally designed to meet parking requirements. Our goal is to transform this sqaure and thereby set an example for other unused plazas in the city. We’re exploring how we can reduce parking and reclaim space for what’s valuable to the neighborhood and its residents.
During this session, we’ll take you through the vision behind the Transition Square and the initial possibilities we see. We’ll share our ideas and challenge participants to contribute their thoughts on new solutions. The Transition Square will serve as a testing, experimentation, and learning environment for the city: a place where ideas are tested and lessons are learned.
From Product to Value Case | Thursday, October 22 | 9:30 a.m.–12:00 p.m.
How can we make social and environmental value visible and open to discussion?
Are you working on an innovation that delivers multiple benefits at once—such as combating heat stress, improving health, retaining water, increasing biodiversity, or creating spaces for people to come together? Do you also find it difficult to put these innovations into practice?
During this session, we’ll address this challenge that many disruptive innovations face. Together, we’ll identify the obstacles and explore ways to bring the innovation’s value to the forefront.
Through Living LAB 040, we’ve been working on developing a Value Case methodology. We’ll share this methodology with the participants, after which we’ll put it into practice ourselves. Does this methodology help you better highlight the value of your innovation?
An interactive session for anyone working on innovations and area development who wants to discover how to make the leap from a good product or idea to a broader Value Case.
Mobility and Car(e)
We want to redefine urban spaces and the role of the car in dense cities.
We see several projects where mobility HUBS and central parkink houses are inplemented as a solution. Unfortunately there is a gap between the solution and the current need of people. Therefore we wonder, how can we design for change, creating spaces that can facilited the (parking and mobility) needs of today, and transform over time?
In this session we share our ideas and present the project Car(e). Car(e) explores contemporary mobility through repair, reuse, and collective care. At its centre is De Vlam, a 1972 Volvo 144, which is collaboratively restored and used as a shared vehicle. The restoration process connects practical, theoretical, and personal forms of knowledge. In doing so, it cultivates both a sustainable relationship with the car and new ways of navigating societal challenges together.
Please note: There are a maximum of 20 spots available per session. Advance registration via Eventbrite is therefore required.
Participation in the sessions is free. In the event of a no-show, a fee of €75 (excl. VAT) will be charged. By registering for the session, you agree to this condition.
