Premiere Movement in the making: Designing in a changing world X Systemic Narratives

What is the documentary about?

This documentary brings into view how design can be used to address societal challenges in fields such as healthcare, construction, and safety. The documentary introduces three designer and partner duos from Dutch Design Foundation's Co/Labs programme (formerly World Design Embassies) and takes an in-depth look at these three collaborations. How did these relationships develop? What was exciting, unexpected, or surprising? How did design help move complex, seemingly stuck challenges forward? And how can design practice continue to evolve to contribute to mission-driven innovation?

Systemic Narratives

After the screening, we will share insights from the Systemic Narratives project, carried out by EIT Culture & Creativity in collaboration with the New European Bauhaus (NEB). This research project gathered lessons from completed NEB Lighthouse projects: European projects that work from the values of beauty, sustainability, and inclusion to shape the way we design, live together, and shape our environment. The findings have been translated into stories that give visible and tangible insight into what makes these projects transformative and what is needed to support systemic change.

Panel discussion

We will conclude the morning with a panel discussion in which four panelists share their experiences and reflect on the insights from the documentary and the NEB Lighthouse projects. The discussion will bring together both a Dutch perspective, with key figures from the documentary, and a European perspective, with participation from EIT Culture & Creativity and the New European Bauhaus office in Brussels. The panelists are:

  • Ambra Trotto, director for transformation at EIT Culture & Creativity;
  • Solène Gautron, policy officer at New European Bauhaus;
  • Tabo Goudswaard, social designer and programme lead of Dutch Design Foundation's Co/Labs;
  • Olof Schuring, innovation consultant at Directie X (Innovation, Knowledge and Strategy) / Makerscollectief at the Dutch Ministry of Justice and Security and Co/Labs partner.

Context

This documentary is one of the outcomes of Expeditie Methodiek, a research project exploring the role of design in mission-driven innovation, that looked at the Co/Labs-programme as a case study. Expeditie Methodiek is a research project by Eindhoven University of Technology and Dutch Design Foundation, made possible by ClickNL.

About Eindhoven University of Technology + EIT Culture & Creativity

This event is jointly hosted by researchers from Making With…, a research cluster within the Faculty of Industrial Design at TU/e, and EIT Culture & Creativity. Making With... explores how design and making can help us navigate complex environmental, societal, and technological change. The cluster approaches complexity through the act of making, always working in context and in relation with different materials, technologies, people, and other actors. EIT Culture & Creativity is the institutional partnership supporting Europe’s Cultural and Creative Sectors and Industries (CCSI) to become more sustainable, resilient, and competitive. By nurturing talent, providing resources, and building bridges, we enable responsible growth and lasting impact.
