illumina: A World Connected by Glass
What are the hidden layers connecting us all?
We often think of the internet as an immaterial cloud, yet its infrastructure is deeply physical. Today's global connectivity would be unthinkable without the vast networks of optical fibre.
Illumina reveals how the internet communicates through light. Follow the long journey of a message as it travels from your device through routers, internet service providers and massive undersea cables.
This interactive audiovisual installation shows how glass quietly holds our society together.
SYNC
Water pumping technologies are unseen but vital for the Netherlands. With a quarter of the country lying below sea level, continuous pumping keeps the land dry.
SYNC shows how we are stuck in an endless motion that can never stop. The water level that makes daily life possible is not a natural equilibrium but a carefully engineered one. Using data from real pumping stations, it reveals how seasonal changes and increasingly extreme weather continuously disturb this balance, requiring constant human intervention. Without pumping, water would return to its natural height and large areas of land would vanish beneath it.
Can we keep pumping forever?
