F*ck the Digital
I get sad when I look around while walking through various cities or sitting inside the bus or train. My view is predictable before heading out; I will see people glued to their phones. People not paying attention to where they're walking. People driving a car whilst texting. People walking with their children whilst on their phone. It's clear to me, we as a civilization are addicted to our little screen that's almost permanently with us.
And I myself are addicted as well. While trying to spend as little time on my phone as possible, somehow I'm not able to control myself. And at the same time, our regular life is becoming more and more digital. Nowadays we've got apps for everything and sometimes it's even impossible to do something without an app (like having a DJI gimbal for example).
Our lives becoming more and more digital makes me feel like we're leaving the physical world and joining a new world, and it's not something that I want to happen. I think it makes our lives less interesting, less social and less adventurous. That's why I say: 'F*ck the Digital'.
Embrace the physical adventure
I've always found physical actions more fulfilling and rewarding. Physically doing my groceries, physically meeting girls and physically climbing trees. It is harder then doing things digitally and that's exactly what makes it more fun and interesting.
The physical world costs more effort than the digital world, but it's the world where I feel alive. The digital world is growing at a fast rate, with some people having more screen time per day than physical time. I feel like I need to consciously fight against not being sucked into a digital lifestyle I don't want to live, where my screen is the door to almost everything I do.
By creating video art in a physical way I want to uncover the battle between the physical way of living and the upcoming (or already ruling?) digital life.
Create wonder and immersion
By filming myself from a tripod climbing a tree as high as I can and making pictures with a flash throughout the route, I gather an image of a tree full of flashes. With this material (the video and the pictures) I want to create an experience of wonder and immersion, since this is what happens when I myself are on a physical adventure.
It's about the perseverance and the passion to make something beautiful, and as 'impossible' as possible. Overcoming your fear of falling when you're inside the tree, by sharpening your senses and controlling your mind to do it safely.
The film will be shown digitally, accompanied by sound design telling the story of fear and stress you can feel while being on a physical adventure, but also the peace and calm when overcoming your fear.
The pictures made inside the tree will be presented physically, revealing the fact that there was someone indeed creating the film physically.
