"Boilers" is a collection of light objects made from copper and glass. The copper I use comes from old heating systems like boilers and water pipes, collected from scrapyards. In my practice I draw on traditional crafts like planishing (metal hammering) and glassblowing. While I don’t blow the glass myself, as a young designer it is inspiring to collaborate with master glassblowers.
The copper serves as a mold for the glass. For the boilers, the glass is blown into the bottom and bulges out of the holes, creating lenses that refract and redirect the light. Boilers can appear as a single domestic lamp or as part of a larger immersive installation. The goal stays the same: to evoke wonder and curiosity in both materials and their light effects.
During Dutch Design Week, I will present both boiler lamps and various other objects like vases.

Objects crafted from scrap copper, such as old boilers, are transformed into unique pieces by blowing glass into them.
"Boilers" by Studio Aikina transforms old copper boilers into unique objects by using the scrap copper as molds for glass blowing. Boilers aims to evoke wonder and curiosity by turning discarded materials into extraordinary works.
