Depicting Dark Waters

In Depicting Dark Waters, deep-sea secrets are captured in glass.

Alice Baker collaborated with marine biologists from University of Gothenburg and Royal Netherlands Institute of Sea Research, in order to bring the bottom of our local oceans to the surface, introducing us to some of the most fascinating and important creatures that live there: cold water corals.

Raising awareness about our local cold water coral ecosystem through glass modelmaking

Did you know there are Coral Reefs in Europe? These mysterious animals can live for over 4000 years, are crucial to the health of the entire Ocean, and are almost never seen alive by humans, until now. Through the creation of scientifically accurate, lifelike models intricately crafted from glass, paired with real skeletal samples, this project sculpturally visualises the most enchanting species of European Cold-Water Coral. Take a peek into life at the bottom of our local oceans, and learn more about what we can do to protect them.

IN COLLABORATION WITH

Royal Netherlands Institute for Sea Research

This Project will be host to the workshop 'Depicting Dark Waters: Delving Deeper', where you are invited to learn more about life at the bottom of our local oceans, and the threats facing it, with the artist Alice Baker, and marine biologist collaborator Dr Rhian Waller. This event includes hands on sensory elements, making the work accessible for everyone.
