Designing Democracy

In need of new dialogues

Designing Democracy calls for a return to listening. Through design, the exhibition challenges us to move beyond debate and rediscover how to speak, hear, and act together in times of division.

Reclaiming dialogue through design to strengthen democracy and bridge growing divides.

Designing Democracy challenges visitors to rethink how we engage with democratic processes amid division and uncertainty. It calls for a renewed commitment to democratic dialogue. The Designers of We Are want the visitors to observe, speak, envision, and act together with courage. They invite the public to take an active role in this often opaque and distant process, making democratic practice accessible and participatory.

The exhibition features five key works that explore the role of cultural experimentation and activation in restoring democratic values. These works create spaces for uncertainty, questioning, and embracing multiple truths. They offer innovative strategies to rethink engagement, emphasizing understanding over persuasion, and fostering connection across perspectives, disciplines, and generations.

Hosted by Foundation We Are

Foundation We Are started seven years ago as a design collective of eight designers and has since grown into a young cultural organization working on social issues and interdisciplinary innovation projects. Their design team regularly collaborates with governments and companies on urgent challenges. In addition, We Are operates a 600 m² exhibition, event, and community space at Strijp-S in Eindhoven, where more than ten designers currently rent a studio.
