About the workshop
During this workshop on just design, participants will learn to work with the Just Design Toolbox, a practical guide that offers concrete tools for spatial designers to integrate justice into their design process. The toolbox consists of a 'Just Design Canvas' and 'Just Design Cards' to help them make conscious justice considerations. Participants can bring their own examples of (in)justice in design for discussion. After the workshop, you will have a better understanding of the justice issues involved in spatial design and how to deal with the dilemma's that will come up in your design process.
About the Just Design Toolbox
The toolbox was developed by Marthe Singelenberg (an anthropologist specialized in urban development), Max Weghorst (who is pursuing a PhD in 'Just Spatial Development' at Utrecht University), and Mats Siffels (a core team member of the Amsterdam Donut Coalition). They followed twelve design teams working on various justice issues within the framework of the Stimuleringsfonds' Open Call "Space for Justice," ranging from fair housing for refugees to combating heat stress in urban neighborhoods. The toolbox highlights the key elements of fair design, but doesn't prescribe the precise process that will lead to a fair design. This is determined in collaboration with stakeholders.
