Co/Lab: The Entire Ocean in a Drop

What if... feeling connected to water changed the way we build our cities?

Future of Now and De Waterambassade develop 'In Good Hands' - 20 water-filled pens creating light patterns while writing. Through rituals of filling, using and passing on, a network of water carriers emerges in construction.

Co/Lab The Entire Ocean in a Drop

The Water Embassy is a creative hub where designers and public authorities (Waterschap De Dommel, Municipality of Eindhoven, Province of North Brabant and Rijkswaterstaat) collaborate with the Voice of Water on the city of the future. By joining forces in this Co/Lab, local, regional and national governments work together with designers to foster a new sense of connection with water. Instead of trying to technically control water, the solution lies in collaborating with water, seeing its beauty and realizing that we are part of the natural water cycle.

Ritualisation

'In Good Hands' makes collaboration with water a visible part of the construction process. The water-filled pen creates light patterns while writing and constantly reminds users of water's presence and value. When you use the pen, you become aware of your responsibility to give water an active role in the construction process. Through rituals of filling, using and passing on, water consciousness grows within construction processes. The pens are crafted from oak wood dating to 1258, sourced from a medieval water well - connecting centuries of building with water.

Community

This creates a community of 'water carriers': professionals who are intrinsically motivated to deviate from conventional paths and make water a guiding force in urban development. A movement toward a water-positive future.
