Louvanes, glory to the guts

For Kazerne, young french designer Thibault Philip presents Louvanes, a light fixture made from woven and dyed intestines leftovers from industry

Combining industrial waste from the sausage industry with ancient craft process that had fallen into oblivion, Thibault Philip give to intestines a new symbolic and aesthetic value. The designer works in a radical and manifest way without using petrochemicals.

From past to present : When ancient crafts shape contemporary offcuts.

For Kazerne, Thibault Philip presents a new piece: a fixture made of woven intestine thread and dyed intestine leaf. Taking up the idea of stained glass and biological nest, of the subtle and the strange. This luminaire, tinted with cuttlefish ink and madder, releases a soft, reassuring light that varies according to the membranes it passes through. Blurring the boundaries between art and
design, it is the result of a slow, assiduous process that pushes the limits of matter.

Design is a fascinating instrument to give shape to our (communal) life. Designers give a tangible form to current social issues. Based on their concepts and products, a discussion about the future becomes possible. As a rich educational and business location, Eindhoven is ideally situated to forge new alliances between (top) design talent, companies, administrators, researchers and the public and an exceptional and internationally appreciated breeding ground for design talent.
