Co/Lab: Coalition for Safety

Make more choices.

Our system of public safety and justice is under pressure. Prisons are overcrowded, the courts are slowing down, and there are no simple solutions. How can we make choices when even small changes can have major effects on people and society?

Options

The system is stuck. That is why the Coalition for Safety calls for a new perspective and a new approach. We need to create fresh options together: from everyday practice, from the community and together with citizens. This means embracing uncertainty and daring to experiment. Safety is complex, but when we work together, real change becomes possible.

It takes courage to make choices, especially when they are unpopular. It takes courage to review them, or to rewrite rules and protocols together with others. But by opening up systems, welcoming the unknown and testing new possibilities, we can build a safer and more resilient society.

During DDW the publication 'The power of design: transforming safety practices in 40+ cases' will be launched. This publication brings together insights from more than 40 projects. It gives an overview of makers, ideas, and knowledge that together form a growing movement. It shows what has already been developed and how it can support new challenges. The publication is not only here to inspire. It is also an invitation: join us and discover how design can contribute to a safer society.

Fem-ik-zie-je

What if you could no longer walk the streets safely because you are threatened by your ex-partner? In the Netherlands, on average one woman every eight days is killed by her (ex-)partner. Too often this is the tragic end point of years of control, intimidation and abuse.

Fem-ik-zie-je (“Fem-I-see-you”) is a victim support device: a small transmitter with an emergency button. The control room can monitor 24/7 and send a warning when the offender comes too close. The woman is called immediately to get to safety. In this way, Fem-ik-zie-je connects technology and care: offering freedom of movement, protection and the chance to intervene in time.

The Civil Servant of the Future

People are losing trust in the government. That is why it is important to strengthen the rule of law. The exhibition De Ambtenaar van de Toekomst (“The Civil Servant of the Future”) shows how civil servants can prepare for their future role. Visitors step into a world that shows what might happen when the rule of law is at risk. This research led to a prototype that gives civil servants simple tools and new ideas to act when things change.
