ReKnit Edit

Giving new life to discarded knitwear using interchangeable design elements.

I’m Ioana Stefanescu, founder of ReKnit Edit, a project developed during my Master’s thesis at TU/e. Through flaw-based cutting and reknitting, I transform discarded knitwear into bespoke pieces, challenging the moment we call clothing waste and the value we choose to let go.

Rethinking Waste

ReKnit Edit reimagines the afterlife of clothing by rescuing discarded knitwear from waste streams. In the Netherlands, the majority of donated textiles, especially knitwear, due to its fragile structure, are sent to incineration. This project sees damage not as the end, but as the beginning of reinvention, reclaiming materials as sources of creative potential.

Making

Working with rejected sweaters from Het Goed and leftover samples from the Knitwear Lab, I developed a method of flaw-based cutting and reknitting. By repurposing traditional trimming techniques, typically used for decoration or finishing, I reconstruct fragmented garments into new, adaptive pieces.

Value Shift

ReKnit Edit asks: Why do we only value raw materials? If we can preserve energy, design, and intention, why not continue the life of what already exists? Each remade garment becomes a provocation, challenging fast fashion’s throwaway mindset and offering a better way forward.

I am Ioana Stefanescu, a designer with a background in Industrial Design. My work focuses on circular systems, material recovery, and design-led repair. I explore how flaws, waste, and discarded garments can become sites of transformation. I blend craft, service design, and storytelling to challenge linear models in fashion and rethink the role of the maker in a regenerative future.
