Conceptual Vision
This collection is inspired by the geometry of birth charts and the angular relationships between planets, which in astrology carry potent energies. It explores the tension between vertical and horizontal planes, expressed through contrasting materials: stark steel and tactile, natural wool. This series of side tables use simple geometric forms to convey symbolic meaning, balancing structure, materiality, and esoteric references. The triangle embodies equilibrium and flow, the square explores tension and antagonism within a cubic volume through the offset tabletop and legs, and the circle represents unity and harmony. It is expressed in a flawless form adorned with hand-hammered metal leaves, also in circular mirror version. The upholstery on the legs, featuring a subtle traditional geometric pattern in primary colours, unifies the collection, reinforcing visual stability and simplicity of form while connecting materiality and symbolism.
Signature Materiality
Textiles play a key role as unique handcrafted components that inherently embody Bessarabian artisanal craft. They are sourced across the country from independent artisans, and curated for their distinctive patterns and weaving techniques. Repurposing them in unexpected ways reflects a dialogue between tradition and contemporary values.
The brand leitmotif - hand-hammered iron combined with polished stainless steel, runs throughout all previous collections. Black textured iron takes on organic shapes such as leaves or abstract branches, linking in the theme of nature. The contrasting polished steel, or mirror, share similar properties such as reflectivity and purity, bringing a contemporary touch to the designs.
Each piece is carefully hand crafted in Moldova, weaving folk references into a contemporary, timeless design.
Inspirations and Aspirations
The rich local aesthetic shapes each collection, named Season. The title reflects nature’s cyclical rhythm—its constant change and movement, the patterns of weather and elements, and their inherent, almost personified qualities—the alchemy of matter.
These themes draw on symbolism, superstition, and tradition, forming the core of APR/MAY’s designs.
The goal is to bring elements and visual poetry of Eastern European culture to the global design stage, showcasing the region’s creativity and securing its place on the international design map.
