Studio Drift shows beating heart of drones above Rotterdam

5 May, on the 75th anniversary of Liberation Day, 2019 ambassadors Studio Drift showed their drone installation Franchise Freedom above the city of Rotterdam. The 300 illuminated drones that make up the artwork, previously shown at Burning Man and above NASA grounds, are programmed to mimic the behaviour of a murmuration of starlings. For this occassion, the 300 drones formed an a beating heart above the Erasmus bridge to honour healthcare workers and people suffering due to the coronavirus.

The location of the performance was kept secret to prevent people from gathering in crowds to watch. Dezeen streamed the event live as part of their Virtual Design Festival.
