The protests against police brutality and systemic racism around the world have brought the conversation about ethnicity and equality to the spotlight. This has caused the design industry to reflect on their responsibilities in this issue. As a result, the first online Where are the Black Designers conference will take place 27 June. Register now!

The protests against police brutality and systemic racism have caused organisations, companies and entire industries to reflect on their responsibilities in this issue. The design sector is no exception. The 2019 AIGA Design Census reports that only 3% of designers in the US, across disciplines, are black.

Conference
Mitzi Okou and Garret Albury are the initiators of Where are the Black Designers?, an initiative which aims to give a platform to creatives of colour. They state that the design industry is lacking black voices. ‘How can we “design for change” when the design industry is part of the problem?’ By means of a conference connecting designers, educators, and creative leaders they hope to start a dialogue about change in and out of the design industry.
