Embassy of Circular & Biobased Building

Building as a Landscape

Our new programme: Building as a Landscape, where nature, construction, and infrastructure converge to create regenerative urban landscapes. The central question we explore is: How can we connect buildings and infrastructure with nature to develop a regenerative urban landscape?

Building as a landscape

Together with start-ups, ecological experts, and construction companies, we are seeking new insights, materials, and building systems to ensure the livability of the built environment for humans, animals, and nature—now and in the future. Water, the source of all life, plays a central role in this vision.

Programme components

The programme consists of 3 components:

1. Ongoing research
We conduct continuous research into the possibilities of regenerative construction, both now and in the near future. We share our findings through publications, lectures, and videos, offering valuable insights to everyone interested in building a more sustainable world.

2. Visualising a regenerative urban landscape
A core part of the programme is a growing exhibition, featuring a scale model installation that illustrates the synergy between nature, construction, and infrastructure. Around this model, we display mock-ups of regenerative building systems—both scaled-down and full-size—that inspire professionals and the wider public. The first version of this exhibition will be showcased at Dutch Design Week 2024 and will continue to expand as it travels and grows.

3. Practical application of regenerative systems
Finally, we aim to implement and apply regenerative building systems in practice. To this end, we bring together innovators, ecologists, and construction stakeholders around concrete case studies. We create public experimental spaces where the developed systems can be tested, to inspire others.

Dutch Design Week 24

At the exhibition of the Embassy Circular & Biobased Building during DDW24, we will showcase the first results of our programme. Here, you will see a 3D-printed pavilion model made from earth, along with a publication featuring over twenty existing regenerative building systems from the construction and infrastructure sectors. We will highlight the ambitions of various partners and display mock-ups of several new ecological building systems developed by Terrestrial, Urban Reef, Omlab, Studio Tjeerd Veenhoven, and BESE. We warmly invite you to join us in our quest for new perspectives on a regenerative city and infrastructure.

Embassy Circular & Biobased Building
Under the leadership of Biobased Creations, companies, creatives, policymakers, and knowledge partners from the worlds of construction, infrastructure, nature, water, and agriculture are working together to create new perspectives for a regenerative city and infrastructure. Following The Growing Pavilion, The Exploded View in 2020, and Possible Landscapes, the Embassy will present its work in the coming years through the Building as a Landscape programme.
