Art Manufacture: Gardening an Industrial Wilderness

Manifold Steel - Wall Piece No. 1 — © Seok Park

Fresh and offcuts of Sheet metal steel, bricks, demolished construction material are transformed into 3 objects that Zavier "gardens" a society which he sees as a industrial wilderness. These objects carries his thoughts that reflects on the effect of a post industrialised society on who we are.

Manifold Steel - Wall Piece Number 2

Manifold Steel - Wall Piece No. 1 is a wall art that is designed to function like a shelf. It serves to get viewers to admire it like a painting but also has a function of a shelf where one can place things on. It is made from sheet metal steel. It carries Zavier's reflection on the impact of social media and technology.

Social Media tends to reduce and oversimplify things. Sheet metal to the artist/maker carries that reductive quality. He wanted to transform what is perceved as a negative quality into something beautiful. While social media oversimplifies human existence, utilising both digital design tools and handcraft, the act of making the pieces seeks to subvert it and turn it into an object that mirrors our human complexities and complex stories.

Steel metal is used because of its reductive quality. We live in an age where social media forms us more than we think , however social media is also reductive on its own. Social media tends to reduce us. Zavier wanted to capture who we are in an object in response to this hence by subverting something reductive into something more complex.

Junk to Funk Console Side Table 1 and Coffee Table

Junk to funk” is a series of tables for lounge areas made from bricks/metal obtained from Area 51, Strijp-S,Eindhoven when they went through renovation and demolition a few years ago. It applies the principle of “valued based performance instead of what we traditional know as “performance based value” to materials. Materials are first valued and then given a function instead of the other way where the function determine the material.
