Sex in the City, a speculative installation designed by Nøha (Not only Human Architecture) and curator and speculative futurist Lena Tünkers, is an insight to one of the many possible futures ahead.
Step into the Future!
A Monday morning in Eindhoven, 21 October 2097. The display on the square shows 50°C and warns of a light sandstorm around 15:00. We don't feel the heat, and the suit will protect me from the flying sand particles, cocooning my body in its organic structures. I look down. The same suit for all. Mine has colourful stickers from the many places I have lived.
I check-in to the public space and pick up the city's sticker - nice logo. I travel light. Just a toothbrush, my e-device and a water bottle. All physical belongings, such as my precious Swedish crime novels, favourite artwork by Frederique Jonker and grandma's reading chair, are safely stored in the Bank of All Things.
First, I go to the public toilet, unfold my pod and take a shower. We love public toilets: clean, private and always available. This one has a special forest look. The bubble folds back into my suit as I close the toilet lid. Time for a coffee. A comfortable chair on Stadhusplein invites me to sit down and I order my daily morning coffee online at Koffie Keutan. They serve early birds in this public square. The area begins to fill.
Sex in the City is an insight to one of the many possible futures ahead.
What will the future that awaits us look like? A future with escalating temperatures, extreme weather and water issues, critically unaffordable housing. Amidst these challenges, people give up adapting their built environment to the changing conditions. Instead, they tweak their bodies at hit on the road…
