Noctilucent is a project where Chelsea de Ridder challenges you to think about the place technology has in our world. How does the now reflect the future? Do we realize what we have? This piece shows that we are on the breaking point of art and technology becoming inseparable.

Clouds above

Noctilucent clouds consist of ice crystals. These clouds are only visible from the ground during astronomical twilight. They are higher up than any other clouds, occupying the layer of atmosphere known as the Mesosphere. This makes them hard to see without the right circumstances. Noctilucent clouds take many different shapes and patterns, because of that categorizing them is difficult.

Understanding the present

This piece is a contemporary reaction to humanities relation to technology. How our lives have been irreversibly changed, and how we don’t seem to realize this dependence.
Technology harmonizes with our lives so seamlessly it became part of our anatomy. It simplifies yet offers so many opportunities.
The techniques used for this project also reflects this harmonization. A combination of tailoring and a technique where a flexible filament is 3d-printed onto stretched fabric. It symbolizes a future where technology and fashion seamlessly blend together to create, express and aid.

Just like Noctilucent clouds, technology looms over our lives at an unreachable height. The full picture is only visible under specific circumstances.
