Our Future Is Somewhere Here

A conversational board game about memory, experience, and the futures we shape together.

"Our Future Is Somewhere Here" is a social game created by artist Ål Nik. It invites players to create “future scenarios” by weaving memory and personal experience into dialogue on climate, migration, technology, and care, opening space for shared reflection instead of conflict.

Designing for Dialogue

The game grew out of an artistic research process that combined graphic design, storytelling methods, and participatory workshops. Every element - board, cards, prompts, and structure - was carefully crafted to balance clarity with openness, creating a safe space for the players to open up and reflect.

This design process ensured the mechanics to encourage conversation, collaboration, and reflection rather than competition, as the game is a collective one and there is no single winner, but all.

At Dutch Design Week, the visitor is invited to explore the game, participate in a game-playing session, or have a chat with the maker, Alexandra Nikolova (Ă…l Nik).

Future Directions

"Our Future Is Somewhere Here" is ready to move beyond the prototype stage. The project is seeking a publisher to produce a high-quality edition and to explore its modular potential. The game can be adjusted to different groups and contexts (schools, cultural organisations, communities, team buildings or even intimate gatherings), thus it can evolve in many directions.

The next step is to grow these possibilities, bringing the game into wider circulation while continuing to develop new expansions and adaptations through play and collaboration.

About Ă…l Nik (Alexandra Nikolova)

Ål Nik (Alexandra Nikolova) is a visual, digital, and sound artist, graphic designer, and artistic researcher whose work moves between publishing, storytelling, and collaborative play. She explores how memory, time, shared, and personal experiences shape our sense of the future. As a maker of “Our Future Is Somewhere Here”, she brings art and design together to craft tools that spark dialogue, reflection, and new ways of imagining collective futures.
