How can we rethink the social and environmental impact of design weeks on their host cities?

After its Milan Design Week 2025 launch with CIVICITY, Redesigning Design Weeks now lands in Eindhoven for Dutch Design Week. Resident designers Pete Fung and Studio Method share insights from their work in Milan, followed by a discussion with local experts about the context in Eindhoven.

The impact of Design Weeks

Design weeks around the world have become vital events where designers, companies, and visitors come together to exchange ideas, knowledge, and ambitions. But despite their cultural and economic value, their current format often disconnects them from the places they're hosted in. With Redesigning Design Weeks, Nieuwe Instituut invites designers to critically rethink the social and environmental impact of design weeks on their host cities.

Redesigning Design Weeks

As an active participant in many of these events, Nieuwe Instituut calls on itself and others to rethink how design weeks are currently structured and propose tools for new formats. Launched at the Milan Design Week 2025 with a strong focus on social sustainability, the Redesigning Design Weeks project now lands at Dutch Design Week in Eindhoven to explore key steps in reshaping design events within the Dutch context.

Programme

Join us in our effort to create the Redesigning Design Weeks toolkit for designers, organisations, and cities. We kick off by sharing insights from Milan with designers-in-residence Pete Fung and Studio Method, after which local experts, including Miriam van der Lubbe (Creative Director at Dutch Design Week), explore how the Milan approach can translate to the local context of Eindhoven and Dutch Design Week. The conversation is moderated by Nadia Troeman (programme manager at Nieuwe Instituut). What is learned will be fed into the toolkit: a ‘living’ manual designed to evolve and expand over the coming years.
