SKRAF is an alphabetic system for patternmaking based on old Icelandic weaving patterns. With SKRAF the user creates unique patterns that echo the message they intend to be seen and deciphered by the receiver, Allowing slow communication in a fast paced world.
Examining the possibilities of pattern-making
SKRAF aims to give traditional icelandic weaving patterns a new purpose in an attempt to create a meeting point between the then and now. Each letter of the alphabet plays a role that results in every written word receiving a unique pattern. Communication through the abstract gives the user a chance to be intimate or speak in a secret language.
Pattern-making as a language?
SKRAF examines the possibilities of pattern making, playing around with surfaces, function and meaning. Ornamentalism and decorating is often overlooked in mass production, how can we as designers evolve it into the present time? The goal with this project is to create a tool that goes into the hands of the viewers. How can they apply patterns in their surroundings? What messages do they want to display?
What do you want to say?
The viewer is the one who places value in the messages conveyed through pattern. The project’s goal is to exalt the storytelling method that pattern making is and has been throughout time. The project at DDW will showcase a poem through the pattern for the viewer to decipher or simply to look at and wonder.
