Welded Loop is a collaborative project between Knit in Motion and Studio Joris de Groot. Together, they explore the potential of Thermoplastic Polyurethane (TPU) in design by combining knitting, welding and 3D printing techniques in an innovative way to create a sustainable, recyclable product.
Welded Loop
Welded Loop is a collaborative project exploring the innovative potential of Thermoplastic Polyurethane (TPU) through knitting, welding and 3D printing. Aiming to create fully TPU-based footwear, the designers explore how these techniques can merge into a sustainable, recyclable product that maintains the functionality of traditional shoes. For the development of the outsole, they teamed up with footwear designer Josef Trojan (Concept Crafter) to explore new possibilities. After Suzanne and Joris developed a method to build an entire shoe from TPU, they expanded their research designing other accessories such as bags, using these techniques. At Dutch Design Week 2025, they present their ongoing process of the Welded Loop project, showcasing tests, prototypes, and unexpected outcomes that highlight the material’s potential. Using the factory as a playground, both designers work hands-on with machines, challenging conventional production methods and pushing the boundaries in an innovative way.
