3D printing with bacterial materials of the future

Shahar Livne &. Jelle Heuver research the potential of using growth patterns from nature to to inspire and investigate design with a new local material produced with bacteria by ColorFabb.

PHALIVE intro

PHALIVE is a collection of sculptural objects that explores what “natural craft” means in an era of digital transition.
Historically, craft was defined by the human hand shaping local organic matter (like wood or clay). Today, we ask: Can a digital algorithm be a natural tool? Can bacterial fat be our clay?
By using generative algorithms to guide the 3D printer, the objects in this collection display the same structural intelligence and poetic complexity found in wild ecosystems of bacteria.
They look organic because they are designed using the very same mathematical rules that corals grow in and bacteria reproduce.
The project explores the ethical and philosophical implications of working with bacteria extracted materials.
The resulting objects are completely home-compostable and marine degradable, leaving behind absolutely zero toxic microplastics.

The objects are made with a novel material developed by ColorFabb.

About Shahar Livne & Jelle Heuver

Conceptual material designer Shahar Livne explores material narratives and Eco philosophy through her distinct design practice, while Jelle Heuver, is a 3D designer and maker, playfully connects techniques and disciplines from sculpting to printing.
For this project, they collaborated by combining there practices of material storytelling with innovative digital sculpting.
