BLEND

BLEND Close-up
Ronald Smits

BLEND is inspired by the thought that out of one tree, the same wood, different patterns and structures can be gained. It visualizes the effect of different sawing techniques by emphasizing the woodgrains. By playing with inlay work and grain directions, the wood shows a surprising new perspective.

The project BLEND is inspired by the thought that out of one and the same tree, the same wood, different kind of patterns and structures can be gained. BLEND is based on the idea to visualize the effect of different sawing techniques by emphasizing the woodgrains. By using a quarter sawing technique, woodgrains appear as stripes. With a plain sawing technique, woodgrains appear as flames.
The design of BLEND shows wood in an unusual way by using both quarter- and plain sawn timber. Also by playing with the inlay work and grain directions, the wood shows a surprising new perspective.

Ward Wijnant

Ward Wijnant (1987, Tilburg) developed during his studies at the Wood and Furniture College various furniture making techniques and a broad material knowledge. At the Design Academy Eindhoven he learned conceptual thinking and working. He graduated as an independent designer and started his own company in 2015. Wijnant’s work is characterized by experimenting with materials and looking for boundaries in them. The unexpected as a discovery in a product is meaningful for him.
