Living in a small space is a worldwide trend and social movement. During DDW we will launch two new, cleverly designed products within this theme: a foldable desk and a compact coatrack. The exhibition also shows other designs within the Vij5 collection specifically suitable for small living spaces.

The ‘Small Living’ trend

Living in a small space is a worldwide growing trend and also a social movement. Even in the premium sector, this ‘trend’ is appearing. Small living spaces are celebrated as a new luxury and contemporary freedom. As a result, interiors are becoming more flexible, multifunctional, and individual. But there are also specific spaces in a (larger) house, which require compact solutions, such as the hallway, bathroom, or the (new) home office.

Advantages of ‘Small Living’

There are various reasons to move into a compact home. For many, it is a fact of life. Lack of space and high home prices in larger cities make people live in a limited volume. Others consciously choose to downsize the space they live in, simplify, and live with less. They embrace the freedom that accompanies the tiny house lifestyle and want to own an extremely functional home instead of having unused square meters that need to be looked after, cleaned, or repaired. This way, small living is about more than simply living in a small space (although, a small house is certainly part of it). It comes with advantages: living in a small space is a perfect opportunity to reduce your energy consumption and lower energy waste. Small homes and apartments are also charming, more affordable and easy to maintain, which is why more and more people are opting to live that way.

Design for ‘Small Living’

In order to make living in a compact space possible, designers will have to find innovative solutions. Relevant questions are; what function the home of the future should fulfill, what sustainable living solutions look like, how individual demands on living will change, and where work and social life will take place in the future. In our opinion, compact living spaces don’t have to feel small. Smart design can make homes fun and interesting enough for comfortable and aesthetic living. During DDW 2022 we are also launching two new, cleverly designed products within this theme: a foldable desk and a compact coatrack. An overview of all designs from the Vij5 collection that are specifically suitable for small living spaces will also be on show. The exhibition gives design inspiration for any kind of small living area, such as (home)offices, tiny houses, holiday homes, sheltered homes, small apartments, or even cozy corners and area’s in your home of any size.
