(Archive) The kids are playing around the pool

A series of interactive objects, installations, and architectural interventions turn an exhibition into a playground.

This project was part of DDW 2022

Alexandre Varnier, Erik Campanini, and Athanasios Paspaliaris investigate the concept of playfulness by triggering collective imagination and engagement. Can we design together and play together while questioning our practices? Can I boulder to my bed? Can a No Puppets Theater tell stories?

The kids are playing around the pool

Isola is bringing the work of Eindhoven-based designers Alexandre Varnier, Thanos Paspaliaris, and Erik Campanini to Burgers.

Children can make drawings of chairs and see the chairs already made by Thanos Paspaliaris based on children's drawings. One of the drawings will be made during the week as a live act. Climbing on the furniture by Alexandre Varnier, adults can release their inner child. In the "Mobile No Puppets Theater" by Erik Campanini, which has no puppets or puppeteers, the viewer interacts directly with the mechanism of the objects by activating the story.

Burgers

Burgers is a hidden gem in Eindhoven, hosting independent creatives in their studios, a vintage clothing store, a second-hand bookstore, and an event space where itโ€™s all about connecting, coming together, making food, making music, and enjoying this all together. Visitors can experience the designer's work and join a jam session. Some of the creatives at Burgers will open their studio during DDW22.

Open studio's: 9Lives, Antwan van der Kerkhof, Books 4 Life, Huiskamer, Las Erop, Martin Voorbij, Peli Design, Studio Aldrik, Studio Hertogstaat, Studio Snahter.

Designer Statement

On the Eleven of August 1990, Ilse, Inge, Monica, Mira, Rens, Walter, Edwin, Odette, Richard, Eveline, Chris, Robert, Hein, and Heidi entered two by two at Hertogstraat 2 later, Bart and Paul climbed the building to open the back door.
They had to stay quiet that night. In the morning, they called the police to officialize their stay in the empty building. The tenants begin to pay the rent to themselves to provide the money for the renovation of the place. In 1992 after 2 years and 3 months, they were able to buy the building. The Burgers is a community in Eindhoven that guarantees a place for creativity, social discussion, and the exchange of ideas.

Through interactive objects, installations, and architectural interventions, we want to open a dialog with this place and its inhabitants by investigating the potentiality of community building and playgrounds in living places.
We see a place that transforms through our comprehension of practice, space, individuality, and society. We are playing around the pool, speculating, and traveling on its border, Trying to challenge our perception of risk, engagement, and work.
