Body Data as a Tool for Design
Today, an unprecedented amount of human body data is becoming more accessible than ever. Information on posture, movement, heat or respiration can be captured and translated into measurable parameters. Adaptive System explores how this wealth of information can be used proactively in clothing design, transforming data from a source of observation into an active design material.
Inspired by biological tissues, which naturally differentiate their properties according to the body areas, the project proposes a computational methodology for creating a multifunctional surface system. Body curvature, heat, and solar exposure were mapped and translated into three interconnected layers to support movement, enhance ventilation and provide targeted protection. Additive manufacturing was then selected enabling the garment to be constructed progressively, grain by grain, allowing digital information to directly shape material behaviour.
Adaptive System proposes a shift from designing clothes for an average body to designing through the body itself, opening the possibility of garments that do more than cover, but actively respond, support, and adapt.
