Asian fusion dishes
Have you ever been to an Asian restaurant? When we see this increasing number of Asian restaurants, it’s clear how popular Asian culture has become. Food is a wonderful tool for experiencing a different culture.
However, Asian restaurants in Europe often claim to sell cuisine from a specific country, but in reality, they present a mixture of dishes from neighboring countries. They are creating a "plausible" version for consumers who don't have deep background knowledge. While Asian culture is being trendily commodified, discrimination against Asians within Europe still exists. In other words, the image of Asia is accepted, but the people of Asia are not.
"Amazing Something" uses food models to showcase the fixed, stereotypical image of Asia that Europe consumes. By requesting a Vietnamese studio to manufacture models of European versions of ramen that don't actually exist, shipping these uncanny 3D objects to the Netherlands, and exhibiting them, the process brings up questions. Who created ‘Asian fusion’ for whom? How do you feel about the Asian fusion dishes that are translated in the European version?
