This prototype shows a circular economy that brings the energy transition, which takes place outside the city, to life in urban spheres.

Biogas Chandlier

The installation of the chandelier is part of a social and ecological Summer School, which will take place at the end of August on the site of the Wilhelmsburger Zinnwerke as a project of the association Zinnwerke e.V. and will open a future-oriented urban cycle for biowaste. The goal is to create a local model project for the circular economy that will inspire imitation worldwide: pupils will work together with students, teachers and local experts to build a small-scale biogas demonstration plant. With the help of the plant, food leftovers from the canteen of the Wilhelmsburg district school are converted into gas for cooking and into fertilizer for the school garden. Construction waste from the neighborhood is processed for the aesthetic design of the plant house. The goal is to turn the ostensibly mechanical device into an active communication building with diverse event formats about circular environmental awareness. We want to start a movement, in which there are only resources and no more linear waste.

About Zinnwerke e.V.

The main objective of the association is the networked promotion of art, culture and ecology, including education at the interface with science and research in the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg. This holistic approach does not ignore issues of age and origin and thus also takes care of urban welfare in youth and elderly care, public health and sports. The activities of the association in the multi-ethnic urban society naturally also serve the goal of international understanding.
