Design Academy student Maayke pays tribute to her flower-loving grandmother who she lost earlier this year. Her alphabet, with endangered plants, introduces more biodiversity into cemeteries. As the tombstones turn to meadows, visiting cemeteries will be more enjoyable for both humans and animals.

A language of endangered flora

Human beings have a long history of symbolizing flowers to express the unsaid, the hidden message, for people to see, to feel, to empathize with. The language Maayke developed inherent the poetry, yet showing the vitality and fragility of life by the metaphor of the flowers With Dust to Bloom, Maayke pays tribute to her flower-loving grandmother who she lost earlier this year. She developed a language of endangered plants to introduce more biodiversity into cemeteries. She has collected and illustrated 36 native Dutch plants that are slowly disappearing, to be sown on top of graves in a cemetery. As the tombstones turn to meadows, visiting cemeteries will be more enjoyable for both human and animal.
