How well do we, as humanity, adapt in a changing world? The problems are well known, but we don't have a one-size-fits-all answer. The energy transition is just as much a change process accompanied by shocks. Through this installation we want to engage people in the energy debate about the future.

The future of energy, a road toward 2050.

How well do we, as humanity, adapt in a changing world? That question is as old as prehistoric times, and at the same time hyper-topical. Covid-19 has taught us the magnitude of a global shock, its impact on society, and how we respond as biological, social, and political beings in such a crisis. And it is not the last shock to befall us. Weather experts have been assuring us for several years that phenomena like hot summers are not incidents. Climate change is going to bring us more and more storms, droughts, floods and extinction of species. The problems are well known, but we don't have a one-size-fits-all answer. The energy and heat transitions are just as much change processes accompanied by shocks. The debate is fierce, the same discussions constantly recur, making decisions is difficult. How will we heat our homes if the extraction of natural gas in Groningen stops? Where are we going to put all those windmills and solar parks? These are questions that touch on the very foundations: how do we adapt, how does the survival of the fittest take place in the energy transition? To provide inspiration on how to deal with these issues differently, we have developed three future scenarios that address such fundamental questions. The aim of these scenarios is to suggest strategies for adapting to the climate shocks of the coming decades. We look ahead to the year 2050. We are curious about how people view the future of energy and therefore ask everyone to contribute to the debate on this issue. Through a design for insights process we want to engage people in the energy debate about the future.
