'Chakr' is a collection of objects made from waste paper, locally sourced clay soil, eggshells and ground gram. The intention is to understand the complexities of sustainability and explore raw materials. It is research on how vernacular practices can be used for modern day design.

What is Chakr?

'Chakr' when translated from Sanskrit, simply means wheel. When we say wheel, we usually refer to a circle. This simple shape has a deep connotation in my culture. The circumference of a circle has no beginning or end. Circles represent continuous movement and the cyclical nature of energy (prana); they symbolize transformation in life, and wholeness in everything. Just like circles, our symbiosis with nature is cyclical. We have been consuming resources from Earth mindlessly and now, we are facing the biggest bio diversity loss, highest recoded temperatures, ocean acidification and food and water insecurity. This is an emergency; we need to stop taking and start giving, so that balance and harmony can be restored again. Chakr intends to mimic this philosophy through its shapes and forms. The objects are hand-built and have been left to have an asymmetric feel. This invites people to think, create, decide and purchase differently, even though it may not be always be perfect. The bright color palette is drawn from the abundance of nature found in and around Eindhoven. The royal blues and bright teals come from the lush forests that are grounded by a soft yellow that mirrors the Sun. The circularity also corresponds to the raw materials used in the production process.

About Quarter Moon Studios

Quarter Moon is a multidisciplinary studio that practices a hands-on approach to investigate how waste materials can be re-processed and transformed into sculptural and functional objects. We are challenging learned perceptions of traditional materials. The studio's current work is to experiment with materials and tactility, to design and grow within a circular system. Everything we use and produce, is curated to have minimal impact on the planet.
