We are at the dawn of a new space age. Humankind will soon see a return to the Moon, entailing enthusiasm but also responsibilities and new challenges. Among many is the necessity to protect the astronauts' health. EMMA is a rover designed to provide medical assistance to astronauts on EVA missions

When giving up is not an option.

The establishment of human presence on the Moon, prolonged surface expeditions will be required, thus exposing astronauts to great risks and life-threatening situations. EMMA (Emergency Mobile Medical Aid), is an experimental rescue rover, inspired by arachnid deployment. It is designed to provide medical assistance while minimising possible contamination - such as from lunar dust - to maintain the equipment and medical area sterile and efficient. The concept focuses on the premise of a specific situation - a field injury - to target the challenges and constraints set by two extreme circumstances: a medical emergency in a hostile, extraterrestrial environment. In a possible scenario, the unit will be dispatched from the base through an emergency signal and will intelligently self drive to the site with the aid of six legs that are able to adapt to rough terrain, overcoming obstacles for a fast deployment. The mobile unit can accommodate three occupants: two people crew and the incapacitated astronaut,; it is composed of a cargo system (used to generate movement) a medical clinic equipped for basic procedures (i.e trauma related injuries) after entering a dustibule and an airlock

Interdisciplinary demand for human space exploration.

EMMA is a case study on the process and procedures to be followed when dealing with a trauma-related injury in an alien environment. The internal layout might appear redundant at first, yet it is indispensable for its aim. This fundamental aspect introduces a conversation about the new perspectives that human space exploration demands from us and highlights the need of interdisciplinary synergies to succeed. Ultimately, EMMA aims to be the medium of this conversation, telling a story in which Design speaks the languages of different disciplines and affirms its strategic role in shaping a livable interplanetary future.

About EMMA

EMMA is a collective formed in early 2022, after a fruitful workshop at the International Space University. Coming from different fields and backgrounds, we share the same core value: contributing to human space exploration while also serving the community with its purpose. Our goal is to transform the future we imagine into reality, through the lens of Design as it plays an indispensable role in making physical and digital space livable and safe.
