What if a chair was 5 meter wide and a lamp was 4 meter high ? They would be excluded from the norm of proportions but how would that affect their functionality and our relationship to them ? This installation shifts a regular object - a lamp - into an architectural installation.

Some objects are meant to be big and some objects are meant to be small

Our surrounding is defined by the Modulor scale of proportions. The average floor lamp is ~150cm high and the average width of a seat is ~45cm. This antropomorphic scale of objects is right in between the metric and the imperial system. The shape and scale of each objects we use today are related to their functionality and our usage. Some objects are meant to be small and some objects are meant to be big. As a matter of fact this is so rooted in the norms that you will never imagine a microscopic carpet, or a gigantic coat rack. The word Modulor is composed of the words "modulus" and "or". "Or" meaning "gold" in french implies the golden number. Modulus means a basic unit, applicable in series. The Modulor was initially intended to be applicable to architecture, but also to other fields, such as the dimensioning of a car for example. The Modulor is linked to Le Corbusier's modular architecture, his desire to create a housing unit and to build it in series, as he did in the Cité Radieuse in Marseille. Here this lighting installation switches a basic archetypal object - a lamp - into a modular architectural scale installation.

About Lucas Zito

We use objects and we enter spaces. Some objects only belong in some spaces and some spaces are only made for some objects. What is the difference between a boiler room and a kettle ? Since some lights are embedded in the walls - copper cables, switch, bulb, could we say that a room is a big lamp ?
