Exhibition

“xs-excess” is a collective working to analyze and speculate the consequences of creating new materials out of low-value waste. By displaying two distinct projects composed of eggshells and unused sanitaryware, we bring forth our homogenous design ideologies rooted in vernacular technologies.

OUR COLLECTIVE

The world’s consumption of materials has hit a record-breaking 100bn tons a year. This emergency has sent young designers, scientists and engineers into a new experimental space of working with what’s left — which would be the waste — to create new material resources to help sustain and restore the planet. Augmenting sustainable futures, this body of work presents some of the most significant results of the makers' experimental exercises that throws light on alternative ways of working with discarded materials and local crafts. Thus “xs-excess” is a means to observe alternative material-driven design practices and its impact on people, culture and ecology to offer potential solutions for thriving new craft developments.

EXHIBIT 2_ Eggware

Eggware- is a novel ceramic and concrete like material, made out of calcareous food waste- “eggshells.” The global egg consumption peaks at about 1200 billion units/year and eggshells, despite being a pure source of Calcium Carbonate, are majorly discarded or burnt. The maker identified and salvaged this massive resource, and transformed them into strong and long-lasting items of superior quality. The making process consumes no heat as the products are air-dried and the damaged bits from one batch are used up in the next lot, ensuring a zero-waste production cycle.

About YLEM by Midushi Kochhar and Disharee Mathur

“xs-excess” was founded by two Indian designers innovating with traditional crafts to suggest interconnected approaches with residual materials for design practices. Having backgrounds in Industrial and Interior design, they crossed paths in London during their Master’s at Central St. Martins-UAL, RCA and the Imperial College. Having explored ceramics, craft and circularity, they’re coming together to add value to low-cost waste that presents bespoke Indian-made objects, for the future and now.
