Compact Sun, made from 100% recycled plastic, is retrieved from used CD cases. The wall lamp is made fully modular, and is therefore ready for future repurpose/recycling. The mesmerizing reflection is caused by a combination of smart lighting and the 3D printed lines in the material.

Collaborative researchproject

Compact Sun is the result of a collaborative research project with Emmaus thrift stores, van der Hoevenkliniek, the Good Plastic Company, Cantor, Searious Business and vanPlestik. The CD cases are sourced by Emmaus thrift stores in the province of Utrecht in The Netherlands. All CD's that aren’t sold are collected and then brought to Van der Hoevenkliniek where the CD's and cases are disassembled and the separate waste streams are shredded. These shredded flakes are used as raw material for vanPlestik's 3D-printers. During this project, we have also experimented with the sheet presses from The Good Plastic Company. We have developed 3 different products that showcase the value of this material. Compact Sun is the first product that is available for sale. The other products will launch in the coming months.
