In a world divided by class conflicts, La Pierna breaks the classic hierarchy within a table. The leg breaks free from its familiar submissive position to almost completely take over the dominant position of the top.

Social context

While countless people are currently unable to pay their energy bills, the money continues to flow into the hands of the wealthy oligarchs. Unfortunately, the yawning gap between rich and poor continues to widen every day. It seems as if the people are dependent on the rich upper class, but isn't this the other way around? In this furniture design, La Pierna experiments with a change of power that unfortunately still seems utopian in our current society.

Design

In the classic hierarchy of a table, the leg is subordinate to the top. In my ambition to break this power relationship, I looked for a design where the leg is dominant over the top. When using the table, I also investigated the way in which the shape of an object imposes a certain hierarchy on the user. How do I get hierarchy to a round shape? The result of this research is a round table in which the wooden leg almost completely absorbs the marble top. Where no hierarchy is possible with a classic round table, the user of this table is forced to position themselves in a certain way in relation to the marble top, which is asymmetrical on the surface.
