‘Mommy I made an ashtray’ is a collection of brightly coloured ceramic objects. The idea behind the collection draws parallels to Rutger’s earliest experiences of working with clay. ‘As children we are able to use our intuition and playfulness from a naive point of view’.

The idea behind the collection goes back to Rutger’s earliest experiences of working with clay. ‘As children we are able to use our intuition, playfulness from a naive point of view’. Rutger wanted to use this mindset to translate this childlike imagery of working with clay into large scale ceramic objects. With the introduction of a range of beautiful glazes in this series, we highlight the structural surfaces created by the artists fingerprints. Each glaze has its own character, which emphasise the different qualities of texture, structure, and form of the object groups. Coloured crystals emphasise both the structure and surface of the objects, floating colours shine through like blossom on glossy glaze, and two tones change colours on textures. By mixing and matching different glazes and object groups, different features of both the glaze and the object can be discovered.
