Sôritês deals with the raw material sand and explores
the nature and design possibilities of this finite resource by using a constructed apparatus.
A Finite Resource
Concrete, glass, motors, smartphones and tableware. At first glance, a random assortment of objects. But these products are all based on one and the same raw material, which is indispensable in today‘s world. It is quartz sand. Although it often goes unnoticed, it accompanies us every day in many different forms. From glass products to building materials to the chemical industry and electronics, silica sand has become indispensable to us humans. But this steadily growing demand for sand is not without consequences. Erosion of coasts and river banks, irreparable destruction of flora and fauna, water scarcity or massive consequences for agriculture are only some of these effects. Every day, each person consumes about 18 kilograms of sand, and the demand is increasing by 5.5 percent annually.
The Apparatus
„Sôritês - The Modulation of an Indeterminacy“ deals with the raw material sand and explores the nature and design possibilities of this finite resource by using a constructed apparatus. Here, the sand functions both as a drive and as a design element, creating new, non-repeatable visual formations with each use. The question of an adequate amount of sand in relation to the duration of the activated apparatus is central here and sensitises the viewer to an appropriate use of resources and engagement with the raw material sand.
