Humankind
The world is geared towards Homo Economicus, where efficiency, production and time-saving take center stage. From the perspective of the rational traveller, logistics and convenience are important. But how can we implement a transport system that recognises the social context and reduces stress? A system in which alternatives not only make rational sense, but also feel appealing and natural. Why don’t we start by taking a radically human-centred approach?

We have become adept at predicting and measuring mobility behaviour. We select models that allow people to make choices based on time, cost and efficiency. But do we also take into account how people actually experience their journey, what they see and what they actually want to do along the way?

Led by Humankind together with the Ministry of Infrastructure and Water Management, this is a creative workshop aimed at thinkers, practitioners of different backgrounds and policy-makers of any field interested in the human experience within the mobility system. Drawing from citizen experience, performance arts and speculative thinking, this three-hour workshop (including break) unpacks the concept of human-centric design in mobility. The session feeds into ongoing work by Humankind and the Ministry of Infrastructure on broad welfare within the mobility system, aimed at creating a mental shift in the way we plan the future of movement in The Netherlands and beyond.

Language: Dutch.

About Humankind Agency for Urban Change & Ministerie van Infrastructuur en Waterstaat

Humankind is a social design and urban change studio that works at the intersection of city planning, citizen participation and research. Our focus is on creating healthier, more inclusive, and more sustainable urban environments by putting people at the center of transformation processes. We do this through Citizen Experience research, participatory design methods, and strategic visioning with municipalities, developers, and communities. The Ministry of Infrastructure and Water Management is the Dutch Ministry responsible for transport, aviation, public works, land management and water resource management. The Ministry is committed to improving quality of life, access and mobility in a clean, safe and sustainable environment. It strives to create an efficient network of roads, railways, waterways and airways, effective water management to protect against flooding, and improved air and water quality.
