Project render
Project render
Digital work: Niels RLG and Martins Mezulis
Inspired by the question, “Whose hands are behind those gathered around the table?”, form the making of the tablecloth, to cooking, setting the table, serving the meal, and finally washing and tidying everything in preparation for the next gathering, countless acts of labor remain hidden from view.

The project seeks to reconsider the ways in which the experience of sharing a meal has become normalized, while the labor that sustains it often remains unrewarded and unrecognized. At the same time, it brings to light the role of individuals, especially women, who have historically carried out this work. Who are they? What experiences connect them across generations? What aspects of this history have remained the same?

To unfold what lies beneath the tableware is to reveal what has been concealed. It is an act of bringing hidden labor into visibility, allowing it to be seen, acknowledged, and understood. Such understanding requires exposure: making visible what has remained out of sight and reconnecting it to the body, the gesture, and the person behind the work.
