The influence of trust
Certain groups of youth come into contact with the police and the justice system disproportionately often. A lack of trust between youth and the police plays a dual role in this: it can not only lead to unequal outcomes but is also reinforced by that same unequal treatment. The multi-year research project ‘In Search of Trust’ by Erasmus University Rotterdam aims to improve this mutual trust. Together with youth and parties such as the Rotterdam Police and Halt, training courses and tools are being developed, and innovative ways are being sought to make the criminal justice system more just.

How do personal experiences, both from daily life and online, impact the interactions between youth and the police? How is your reaction as a young person towards a police officer when officers are always ridiculed in the TikTok videos you see? And how can you, as an officer, assess the young person in front of you within a few seconds?
Starting with a doorbell, you can engage in a semi-prepared interaction as a duo and experience for yourselves, in a simulated environment, just how challenging this dynamic is.
Contribute to the research
After watching and listening, and possibly an interaction, you are asked to contribute ideas for additions and improvements. In this way, we create awareness among the audience and gather insights into how judgments are formed and how we can break them down.
